<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1tc4DsPB0CPBtBbww7N3uqzl8h49VQGL2" height="640" src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1tc4DsPB0CPBtBbww7N3uqzl8h49VQGL2" style="height: auto; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; width: auto;" width="640"></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="display: inline; font-family: inherit;">In 2017, I volunteered many early Saturdays working with the team at Discovery Place, and rediscovered my love of working with children and teaching people new things. When I had moved to Italy, I fell off the volunteer train as there were not many organizations that were doing that kind of work in Bruneck. When I moved to Milwaukee, I wanted to take up regularly volunteering my time again but due to all sorts of excuses, it never came to fruition. I had volunteered once in 2018 - sorting food at Feeding America around the holidays. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So in January 2019, I decided, along with taking up meditation, that I would volunteer my time at local organizations on a much more regular interval starting with Discovery World, the science museum in town. I handed in my application, had my interview, passed the background check, and started working there very quickly. And over the past year, I can honestly say that taking that jump into regular volunteering has changed my life for the better in so many ways that I would like to share.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">At first, I started with afternoon shifts at the museum working with the kids on small design projects. As I felt more comfortable in the environment, I volunteered to help with workshops, Girl Scout sleepovers, and other small tasks. I started to venture out into similarly related volunteer opportunities like judging the Milwaukee Public Schools Science Fair and volunteering my time for a Girls in STEM Day found in a STEM Forward newsletter. I checked Eventbrite, one of my standard places for looking for things to do around Milwaukee and found several great organizations to work like Newaukee, Seek the Good by Good City Brewing, and Live Milwaukee. Working with these organizations exposed me to different places to volunteer and meeting leaders of organizations that led to more volunteering opportunities. This lead me to teaching a workshop of my own design to a group of students on the Science of Face Masks, something I've always wanted to do. It became part of my weekly planning routine to actively search out places where I could help others or service the Milwaukee community.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">By the middle of the year, I was trying to drag anyone who would listen to me to volunteer or putting up posts on social media on what I was doing to try to inspire others to come serve out community with me. Because for me, these volunteer opportunities were showing me a completely different view of the city I had lived in for over a year. With each different activity, I learned more about Milwaukee and the people that live here. I learned more about the environment and what we could do to keep it safe. I learned about how we handle the homeless and less fortunate in the area. I learned that around me was the thriving community full of people that want to better the area but do not always have the resources to do it.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When driving to see my grandpa in Brooklyn after Thanksgiving this year- I was struck by a quote painted on a mural in Shirley Chisolm State Park - "Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth." Service to your community does not always equal donating money to organizations and never seeing where it goes. Service to me is giving something valuable for the greater good of people. My time is valuable as I get paid to work every weekday and yet I am always willing to not go out on a Friday night, wake up early, and go help better the community for a few hours. Choosing to spend your time like you spend your money is a choice and donating even 1% of your time per year is easy thing to do. Over the course of this year, I volunteered around 1.5% of my total time and that completely changed my outlook on this city and its inhabitants.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">By the end of December and some help from my Google Calendar, I came up with my Service Stats<b>:</b></span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">89 hours to Discovery World helping young people fall in love with STEM like I have</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">10 hours to Urban Ecology Center Root Program ridding MKE of invasive species (Seek the Good)</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">8 hours to helping out people interested in attending Milwaukee Maker Faire</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">7 hours to GEMS Day 2019 helping where needed and learning how to run a STEM day</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">6 hours to judge MPS Science Fairs and interact with a ton of fun children interested in science</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">4 Hours to Black Arts Fest in MKE helping kids draw and learn about their heritage</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">4 hours to The Gathering to help prepare a meal and feed the less fortunate (Live Milwaukee)</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">3 hours given to Milwaukee River Keeper cleaning up an area of Milwaukee (Newaukee)</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">3 hours given to The Big Clean MKE cleaning up an area of Milwaukee (Seek the Good)</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">3 hours Power Gurls teaching my first STEM workshop - The Science of Face Masks</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">2 hours Joe's Run, Walk, or Roll helping walkers finish the course (Seek the Good)</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">2 hours River Revitalization Foundation planting native plants in the forest (Seek the Good)</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">1 very happy and fufilled Taylor Lacey</span><br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My meditation teacher always invites us to challenge ourselves instead of telling us what to do to solve our problems. So I invite anyone who reads this essay to seek out something in your community that needs help and give some of your time to it. It could be volunteering at the library, cleaning up trash in a local park, or working with kids on homework. Whatever you decide, know that even an hour of your time has changed something for the better.</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861354270283866785.post-13478690568029934922019-10-06T08:00:00.000-04:002019-11-14T13:51:23.192-05:00Favorite MKE Places to Volunteer - 2019<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In 2019, I wanted to make service a bigger part of my life. I started to look around the community at places that needed volunteers and give my time to better where I was living. So far this year, I've donated about 150 hours of my time and am very thankful to have gotten to meet some new cool people and try some very different things. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMbIycv4-NHfjEqWNbyuhHDAzK5VNixLbKhSmCSdHNcyVAMVGJCzwltiTu_oSFbQ1MQ5uEdxAcxNt_dEuKhFLFsMfmIki5o-l9tQ4HYLJ6yjuqhsn1nnMzzuPly8ri2NeyIzz8fOyzBk/s1600/AD181680-CC8A-4104-AC17-122ADD0C5A64.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1281" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMbIycv4-NHfjEqWNbyuhHDAzK5VNixLbKhSmCSdHNcyVAMVGJCzwltiTu_oSFbQ1MQ5uEdxAcxNt_dEuKhFLFsMfmIki5o-l9tQ4HYLJ6yjuqhsn1nnMzzuPly8ri2NeyIzz8fOyzBk/s640/AD181680-CC8A-4104-AC17-122ADD0C5A64.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>MPS Science Fair </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I signed up to volunteer at the science fair months in advance but had no idea what would await me. There were kids from 1st grade to high school with a love for science and enthusiasm to match! It was hard to judge as there were many great projects but anything that added a little art made me smile the most. If there is a science fair in your area, check it out because you will not regret it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Milwaukee Riverkeeper</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Being between a river and lake means that a lot of trash seems to accumulate in our waterways. I love volunteering for this twice a year clean up and making sure that the environment is clean for generations to come. I've noticed that in my daily life, I pick up more trash when I see it as I know it isn't good for the local wildlife or flora. There are many cleanups around most towns so jump in and watch your community flourish. </div>

<b>Discovery World</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I started volunteering in science museums when I lived in Charlotte and I cannot stop working at them! Discovery World is a place where kids and adults come to learn about science in all forms. I've volunteered with the Girl Scouts, making candles, working a gala, and many more valuable experiences. I may have not always know how to do something in the beginning but by the end, I felt proficient and had a great time learning with the children.<br />

<b>Urban Ecology Center</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
The Urban Ecology Center has a really big place in my heart because I have learned so much working with them on weekends. Once a month, they work in the areas surrounding their facilities to ensure that invasive species do not kill off all of the native ones. I've pulled out countless weeds and learned how to plant new things as well. It's worth a try for a couple hours of hard work with some really neat people!<br />

I will say that that sometimes they seem a bit weird but I can honestly say that the 10 in this post have really positively benefited me in my daily life and I will keep talking about them until people try them as well! It's important to take care of our bodies and mental health so here are some things I do that make my day!<br />
<br />
<b>1. Tongue Scrapping</b><br />
<br />
I got a tongue scrapper at Lee from America's suggestion and it is a game changer! It keeps your mouth super clean and your breath fresh for a long time. I have a stainless steel one so that it can be disinfected easily. I usually scrap in the morning and before bed.<br />
<br />
<b>2. A Glass of Water in the Morning</b><br />
<br />
I am the worst about hydration so drinking water in the way to work rather than coffee has been super helpful in hitting my water goals daily. Most days, I will have a sparking water or a large glass with lemon and challenge myself to finish it before I get to work.<br />
<br />
<b>3. At Least 1 Piece of Fruit a Day</b><br />
<br />
I eat an apple or orange a day at work and this has really reduced my vending machine usage. It is healthier than a candy bar and I like knowing that I can save the calories for something I really want later in the day.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMSB8lftPKzGrzBkSPe_3ChqomRHBwPIXZxH3LrPSrlw3SXTHo7ekRcW2RYVzhA3GAteuVTeQHtGnQjXbHwcOwtXH_YUYGFQYw-hnW1M0IKZ2vnYBaYwXApSLDieBgswybjFdDGLPftRk/s1600/IMG_0160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMSB8lftPKzGrzBkSPe_3ChqomRHBwPIXZxH3LrPSrlw3SXTHo7ekRcW2RYVzhA3GAteuVTeQHtGnQjXbHwcOwtXH_YUYGFQYw-hnW1M0IKZ2vnYBaYwXApSLDieBgswybjFdDGLPftRk/s640/IMG_0160.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>4. Sitting on a Bouncy Ball at My Desk</b><br />
<br />
I have had this ball for 4 years now and I love it. It forces me to sit up straighter which is very good for my posture. I also use the ball the stretch during the day and it makes sitting for work a lot more comfortable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit2ef5_lktOiXWIgnUkpclGoC6uYqYi_wtEexF-sdzn11PtEXn6QFdXQwySFPtWSIaYZdu36jKnf4wpLniVnErqhJtB9-ZLfxAsswogwPjfuMXNKSlWh80U1Tk14fuOf1xlMFfPrDvQSE/s1600/IMG_0140.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit2ef5_lktOiXWIgnUkpclGoC6uYqYi_wtEexF-sdzn11PtEXn6QFdXQwySFPtWSIaYZdu36jKnf4wpLniVnErqhJtB9-ZLfxAsswogwPjfuMXNKSlWh80U1Tk14fuOf1xlMFfPrDvQSE/s640/IMG_0140.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>5. Getting Up Every Hour at Work</b><br />
<br />
When I wear my Apple Watch, it reminds me to stand once an hour. This has been really good for clearing my brain and checking on small tasks that need to be done around the plant. My goal is to stand every hour without prompting but for now, this is a great medium to keep moving during the day.<br />
<br />
<b>6. Listening to a Podcast While Commuting</b><br />
<br />
My dad has always been a big believer in podcasts and now I am converted as well! I listen to Youtube Videos or podcasts on the way to work every day. It sets the tone for learning and gives me some topics to talk about throughout the day. My current obsession is How Stuff Works or the Freaknomics podcasts.<br />
<br />
<b>7. Working Out or Moving for 30 Minutes</b><br />
<br />
In the summer, this is easier to achieve due to my love of being outside. During the winter, I purchased a small stepper to walk while watching TV and I love it! Moving makes me feel happy so getting this in everyday when possible is crucial.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Q5vC1U8cg-oypSRkdM4PweryjsZ_VWdZHSJfM1MDkinyIi0VIvqnwvWP6CNf8WvnPSrbMeF16ZQ5HlaaifTn_F-w2ebHNDJqrYpOQe5SRhnurnT-FOQf3wHklsKdQUo2CyOBXCTDVb4/s1600/IMG_0286.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Q5vC1U8cg-oypSRkdM4PweryjsZ_VWdZHSJfM1MDkinyIi0VIvqnwvWP6CNf8WvnPSrbMeF16ZQ5HlaaifTn_F-w2ebHNDJqrYpOQe5SRhnurnT-FOQf3wHklsKdQUo2CyOBXCTDVb4/s640/IMG_0286.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>8. Drink A Glass of Kombucha Every Day</b><br />
<br />
I tend to avoid dairy and yogurt so kombucha gives me my daily dose of probiotics. I love the brand above pictured and buy the bigger bottle when possible to help the environment.<br />
<br />
<b>9. Exfoliate Regularly</b><br />
<br />
I love a good mask as my skin can be acne prone when not taken care of properly. I tend to use acid based masks or rice powder cleaners to ensure my skin is smooth and acne-free.<br />
<br />
<b>10. Use Lavender Oil To Help Fall Asleep.</b><br />
<br />
My coworker got me a diffuser for my birthday and I love it! I use a calming oil mixed with the water before bed and it helps me sleep very deeply. I highly recommend to anyone who can be a light sleeper or who likes a little white noise to sleep.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One thing I do during the winter is make my own homemade bread. I first learned about No-Knead bread in college and would make it overnight on the weekends for a great brunch the next day. Many years later, I am still making the same bread with whatever I have in the house. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Happy Pi Day! I hope you got to celebrate with delicious pie and lots of laughs about this fun holiday. Today at work, we had a celebration on each shift so I made a pie to share with my coworkers. It was a new recipe but it came out so good that I had to share the recipe on the blog for other people to enjoy :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii8T0NBjaG34RKGR5eZHxL3WiC0btkASCskltmYwqVG8TqkVOV-4DW9xV0K3fJGDaKoj5Wb_N_85xnYDueZ6_BhiRDEUcB68ZrTEyXLs2lg6r3XhaYwGfbQA-Ggj1wFMac8AtOWK-UVo8/s1600/cTuTAsSiSk6WxWfRTCRMhA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii8T0NBjaG34RKGR5eZHxL3WiC0btkASCskltmYwqVG8TqkVOV-4DW9xV0K3fJGDaKoj5Wb_N_85xnYDueZ6_BhiRDEUcB68ZrTEyXLs2lg6r3XhaYwGfbQA-Ggj1wFMac8AtOWK-UVo8/s640/cTuTAsSiSk6WxWfRTCRMhA.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I made a no bake lemony pudding pie that did not take too much time to put together. First, I made the crust and then I made the filling as I had some time during the evening. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">For the crust - you will need: </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">9 graham crackers</li>
<li style="text-align: left;"> 7 ounces of butter really softened but not melted</li>
<li style="text-align: left;"> 1/4 cup sugar</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">a pinch of the following: salt, cinnamon, vanilla powder, and ginger. </li>
</ul>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Pulse the crackers in the food processor and then pour into a bowl, add the butter and spices, and mix until it feels like sand. Pour all of the mix into a 10 inch pie tin and smoosh into the crust using a glass cup. Place in freezer for 30 minutes to use ASAP or leave in the fridge for a few hours. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For the three layers of filling, you will need:</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">2 packages of instant vanilla pudding</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">3.5 cups cold whole milk </li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Zest of around 4-5 lemons</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">1/2 cup of lemon juice </li>
<li style="text-align: left;">2 8 oz. packages of Extra Creamy Cool Whip</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Make the pudding according to the directions on the box (I used 3.5 cups milk and 0.5 cups lemon juice instead of all milk) and add the zest to the pudding mix. Then, I put it in the fridge for a while so that the flavors could meld nicely. Defrost the Cool Whip in the fridge at the same time. When ready to layer:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ul>
<li>layer half the pudding on the bottom for layer 1</li>
<li>mix one package of cool whip with the rest of the pudding for layer 2</li>
<li>use the second package of Cool Whip for the top layer. </li>
</ul>
Below is a picture of what my pie looked like before I put all the whipped topping on it :) I am sure you could play with different kinds of pudding for the three layers but using vanilla with a hint of lemon was really fresh without being too tart. Once finished, I left it in the fridge overnight and it was delicious today at work around 10:30!</div>
<br />

A personal business card is one of the items that I always carry with me. While a work business card is a great thing to have when visiting customers, suppliers, or potential business partners, a personal business card is something that I use during local networking events, random conversations at coffee shops, or volunteer fairs. I keep them in either a cute pink business card case or inside my wallet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I ordered my cards on Zazzle, which is a great website with a ton of cool modern designs and relatively frequent promotions. When I purchased my cards, they had a 50% business cards sale so check in frequently on the site of your choice to minimize cost for the maximum number of cards. I paid around $11 for 100 cards including shipping. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I chose one of the<span style="background-color: white;"> </span><span style="background-color: white;">preset </span>designs and configured it to meet my needs. The front of the card states my name and my tagline. Words make for a cleaner tagline than phrases or sentences about your abilities. Keeping the number of words in your tagline low allows it to be more impactful. I chose the following:<br />
<ul>
<li>Engineer - I am an advocate for women + minorities in STEM and proud of my engineering degree. </li>
<li>Volunteer - I volunteer for various social causes and would love to get involved in more.</li>
<li>Learner - I love to learn and connect with people who are willing to teach me something new.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Using these three words as my tagline has been a nice conversation starter/<span style="background-color: white;">closer</span> with new contacts at events as we discuss how you can boil your life down into as few words as possible. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtVV9G42CGJmDJFo1JFPRKw2vGHpuN3T3Cojbf8MuaBzLovcmWydNADHytaZ6ZzohtW5mIRvjD2LcbjoYCg7QVGroKvAPhP9B_OZ_9YQ-Vh1QmGRJMZSJeJFPsszJy_McjoHqdA5WQHBU/s1600/fullsizeoutput_4cc8.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="282" data-original-width="457" height="394" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtVV9G42CGJmDJFo1JFPRKw2vGHpuN3T3Cojbf8MuaBzLovcmWydNADHytaZ6ZzohtW5mIRvjD2LcbjoYCg7QVGroKvAPhP9B_OZ_9YQ-Vh1QmGRJMZSJeJFPsszJy_McjoHqdA5WQHBU/s640/fullsizeoutput_4cc8.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
My personal card has three things on the back:<br />
<ul>
<li>my website to demonstrate some of my work outside of my profession</li>
<li>my email which is a link to me in a more formal way</li>
<li>my cell phone number which is a link to me in an informal way</li>
</ul>
While some experts say that you should add a picture, I felt that linking my website allows someone to see my face again if they find that necessary. Social media handles can be included if that is more applicable to your work but in general, my volunteer work contacts need a phone number to call for help and an email to send confirmation details after the conversation. Whatever choices you add to your design, make sure you spellcheck before saving the final design and paying for the cards!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Other creative ways to use personal business cards that I have heard or read about are:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Address cards after people have moved to share info quick with friends or family </li>
<li>Cards with your children's ages and relevant allergy information for play dates </li>
<li>Photography business cards with examples of your work on one side</li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
About 6 months ago, I started getting an Imperfect Produce box once a week. The premise is that you choose everything in your box from a set list of items and your choices are delivered to your house once a week for a fee. I spend a lot of money on produce due to living a very healthy lifestyle so I figured trying the service was worth a shot. It was a complete change to my food routine - moved Meal Prep to Monday, no more going to the grocery store for veggies 1-2x/week, and more organic food in my life. And I was hooked after the second week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPtXAxjnveSvwEWN15GDTdozuxdAis36hjFtafkjpKd6UmqZ-tpoTuidsixt0U6TJLCou175wwJDuJFQZHe7Hrmx6rZWcJgDurH8D49s3PXRc7QG4ckqE5uWXHVuKoPxTnYvxJsqzAqb4/s1600/IMG_0245.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPtXAxjnveSvwEWN15GDTdozuxdAis36hjFtafkjpKd6UmqZ-tpoTuidsixt0U6TJLCou175wwJDuJFQZHe7Hrmx6rZWcJgDurH8D49s3PXRc7QG4ckqE5uWXHVuKoPxTnYvxJsqzAqb4/s640/IMG_0245.JPG" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I usually get about $20-$25 worth of produce and I eat it all by the end of the week. I get very creative with my lunch meal prep and dinners. In the above photo, I took some of the contents of the box in the first photo (carrots, kale, mushrooms, and tomatoes), ground them up with spices, and stuffed it into the peppers - so good! I chopped the cucumbers into a salad and will snack on the fruit at work this week. Each week, I get to try something new or different (pomelo = weekly fun choice) while supporting food that could have gotten wasted from going to a dump. While there are some critical review of the service, especially that the feeling that all of the food could go to a food bank, I chose to support it as it lowers my vegetable bill for the month and exposes me to new foods and creative ways of cooking.</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I haven't written a blog post in what seems like forever (over 8 months!) and I finally got some inspiration to start writing again after all this time. To start out with something familiar, here is what I have accomplished on my 101 in 1001 since I last checked in! I cannot believe that this list will be expiring later in 2019 (!). </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>A Real Picnic in the Park</b></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Every Thursday, East Town Association puts on Jazz in the Park. A jazz band plays from 6 - 9 pm and you can come with blankets and food - no alcohol! - to listen to the band play. I go pretty much every Thursday. As the summer has progressed, the meals I bring to the park have also gotten more advanced. I usually bring some kind of salad, some dessert, and something healthy to snack on while jamming to the jazz. My friends come with lots of snacks, laughs, and sometimes cards to make a Thursday night super relaxing yet fun.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Donate Blood Again</b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">There was blood drive at my job on August 20th and I scheduled a slot to give blood that day! I was super excited and surprisingly, I did not pass out or have any issues at all. The only downside for me is that exercising was a little rough the week after but that side effect eventually went away!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Finally wear a fringe dress I've had forever!</b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I've had this dress for years - the bottom has long fringe while the top is a low cut wrap style top. I've always wanted to wear it for a special evening or a night out. I finally wore it out during Labor Day celebrations in Chicago this past year and again during a night out in Las Vegas the next month! It was super comfortable and I cannot wait to wear it for a salsa dancing class or for a special night out in Milwaukee.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Create a new tradition with my little sister.</b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am home about once a year and while I am there, it seems like everyone wants to do something. My sister and I are both super busy during the holidays and she lives about 45 minutes north of my parents which makes seeing her while home a little difficult. This year, my sister and I made a new tradition of having dinner together without our parents. It was really nice to have time to connect, discuss life philosophy, and see what she has been up to lately. We also had our yearly Ladies Brunch with our mother in the city where my sister lives which was also a super special couple of hours for me.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This year, my mom made some ugly sweater cookies for us to decorate on Christmas Day. We had a little bit of a </span>competition going while making our sweaters <span style="font-family: inherit;">to see which sweater would </span>come out the best. I went with a Christmas tree style sweater and highlighted with snowflake polka dots.<span style="font-family: inherit;"> My whole family had a lot of fun decorating and making a mess with all of the sprinkles and colored icing. In the end, we did not pick a </span>winner<span style="font-family: inherit;"> as they were all awesome and the cookies tasted as good as they looked!</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Last thing on the list that I accomplished recently was a facial! I purchased a Groupon for a Teen Acne </span>Facial<span style="font-family: inherit;"> at The Knick Spa as I have somewhat acne prone skin. All of the products she used were organic and did not irritate my skin at all. The next day, my skin was glowing and so soft. It was super fun to </span>be pampered and my skin still feels amazing four days later!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am slowly but surely crossing things off my 101 in 1001 list. I have 2-3 things from the list planned in August and will make a blog post on those soon! In the meanwhile, check out my adventures of the past few months.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;"><b>Take a beer making class or understand more about the brewing process.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When people come to Milwaukee, it is obligatory to take them to a brewery as Milwaukee is the city of breweries. I took my best friend to Lakefront Brewery - arguable the best brewery in town. They started gluten free beers, organic beers, and some nifty fruit beers before any other craft brewer got into the market. I love taking the tour and learning about how beer is made - each type has different recipes, different fermentation times, and tastes which is such an interesting experiment to trial and taste. I cannot wait to learn more about beer in other brewery tours!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">I took a free self defense class and it was really helpful to me. When I was in Europe, there was an incident with a racist man that really scared me. I wanted to take some self defense classes to make sure that I could always defend myself. This free class taught us a lot on how to get out of wrist grabs and how to use your body weight to get free of an attacker. I booked 3 jiu-jitsu classes in the upcoming months to keep working on these skills and get them to be as second nature to me as fighting can be to a pacifist. </span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">Once a year in Milwaukee, there is a Beauty in Bloom Fashion show, where all of the outfits are made from flowers. The tickets sell out very quickly but with a little bit of luck and lot of checking the site, I snagged a standing room only ticket and got to watch the show. It was amazing to see what the floral arrangers were able to do with flowers. The woman in the picture not only had a fabulous walk, but an awesome outfit. She has dress with a train, all made of flowers. I cannot wait to go next year if I get a chance. </span></div>

With a year of the 2.75 down, I have crossed off 36 things or about a third of the list! I cannot wait to share what I have been up to below as learning is the greatest thing for the soul.<br />

<b>Creating a Gallery Wall and Fresh Flowers Once a Month </b></div>
I have been slowly framing all of the postcards I have collected, maps I've saved and odd things from my travels. It is finally come together and while I love what I have up, I cannot wait to keep growing this montage of my past on the wall. I sometimes forget all of the the interesting things that I've gotten to do so far in my life and it makes me so grateful when I see all of these items on my wall each day when I come home from work.<br />
<br />
I recently got into the habit of buying some flowers for my "coffee" table or my bedroom and I love how festive it makes the apartment feel. When I see the orange gerber daisies I got last week, it instantly puts a smile on my face and that makes the cost of them worthwhile for me.<br />

I have been working out a lot recently with a fitness groupon that I love. I pretty much always keep a workout set of clothing in the car but I found that my favorite sports bra I own is an old one from Old Navy. What I love about it is that it hooks like a normal bra in the back but really supports you in intense movements or during a gentle yoga class. <a href="http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=712561002&vid=1&locale=en_US&kwid=1&sem=false&sdkw=go-dry-maximum-support-sports-bra-for-women-P712561&brandCvoSid=FC3GRPUCGU46&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oldnavy.com%2Fproducts%2Fsport-bras-for-women.jsp">This one linked</a> is pretty similar.<br />

I never thought that I would actually go skydiving but my coworker J invited me to go as that is his hobby. I was a little nervous but with some reassurance from other coworkers that had already went, I drove to the site and did the darn thing. I was really calm the whole plane ride up (thank you yoga breathing!) but got super nervous when I put my feet on the strut of the plane to jump. My tandem instructor just pushed me after the count of three and we went flying! It was such a rush! It was super cold in March to go but honestly, it was one of my top 5 things I have ever done in my life. I am totally going again when it is warm!!<br />

<b>Knife Skills Class</b></div>
I wanted to do something low-key for my birthday because I went skydiving earlier in the month. In every city I lived in America, Sur La Table has a knife skills class. I never took it because it didn't fit with my schedule. This year, it just so happened that it fell on my actual birthday! I booked the class immediately and went to learn more about cutting my food and why technique is so important. Chef Michael taught me that my current knife skills leave a lot to be desired but my main takeaways were not to be afraid of the knife, curl your fingertips underneath your hand to keep them safe, and trust your cutting instincts to increase your speed. I already signed up for two more classes at the store - Cast Iron Cooking and Homemade Gluten Free Pasta. I am so excited!<br />

<b>Extra: Cooking Class at the Milwaukee Art Museum</b></div>
I saw a flier for this class at the museum during the monthly yoga class and I figured it would be an interesting way to learn how to cook something new. The Spring Cooking Class at the museum was more of an instructional class than a hands on class but I loved it anyway! Chef Zack, the executive chef of the museum, made us a full spring dinner party menu complete from appetizer to dessert. Compound pea butter on crostini with cardamom, watermelon radish and spring veggie salad, lamb with salsa verde and a berry poke cake rounded out the menu. It was all delicious and I cannot wait to make this for my friends and family. They will have another one in the fall so be on the lookout!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861354270283866785.post-64559903178849945732018-03-12T08:00:00.000-04:002018-03-13T22:26:13.729-04:00How Italy Changed The Way I Eat As part of my intentions for this year, I wanted to work on healthy eating habits. I have a ton of them but I would say other than reading French Women Don't Get Fat, my time in Italy did a really good job of getting me to eat better and recognize some more mindful eating habits. Here are the 5 main things that I have noticed that have changed in me from a year ago to now.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqlsK623C_xwFfiNl9P5tjCOBGqCx2yov-K9fqMcIa2I7ok3oTBd86QdnNlw8BlcY4fB7WPhLeXRa6QEwrWN2YGj_nKKA0F4oW4GttlqbwTdHe7045JuKBluTybucnl8Ed-GSd3F1aZO4/s1600/IMG_5700.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqlsK623C_xwFfiNl9P5tjCOBGqCx2yov-K9fqMcIa2I7ok3oTBd86QdnNlw8BlcY4fB7WPhLeXRa6QEwrWN2YGj_nKKA0F4oW4GttlqbwTdHe7045JuKBluTybucnl8Ed-GSd3F1aZO4/s640/IMG_5700.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
1. Drinking a coffee or a tea after lunch is a part of my daily routine. The daily crash that we all experience in the afternoon after a good lunch is part of life. What I did not know is that ingesting caffeine after a large meal slows that absorption of the caffeine so that you will not crash later in the evening. In the US, I do not have the perks of an in office espresso machine but a cup of tea or a run to Starbucks on a stressful day makes the afternoon a whole lot better. I do stop ingesting caffeine after 3 or 4 pm so that I can sleep better at night.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLT8KPCgo5Bu1AhCXoPsLxEOwKZ4uf0z80j6g6MItHdaV4Z84yGx9XuyA6kS_OIu3IYdixcowYi4IxIEWrkl6ElcrBkkgDWy6kkObr3pDh7LiL4ggwfQQXslhj_wlOw4YIjWDMumk3NMc/s1600/IMG_0407.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLT8KPCgo5Bu1AhCXoPsLxEOwKZ4uf0z80j6g6MItHdaV4Z84yGx9XuyA6kS_OIu3IYdixcowYi4IxIEWrkl6ElcrBkkgDWy6kkObr3pDh7LiL4ggwfQQXslhj_wlOw4YIjWDMumk3NMc/s640/IMG_0407.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
2. Cooking and grocery shopping with the season's produce has become a norm to me. First, it is cheaper and tastes way better than anything grown in a hotbox or shipped 1000s of miles. Right now it is winter, so most of the veggies that I would use to make salads are expensive or taste way less flavorful. I've been cooking a lot of stews that incorporate beans and heartier veggies like onions, sweet potatoes and squashes. Above is the start of a veggie based "meat" sauce that had lentils, onions, tomato sauce, and squash - all things that you would have in the kitchen in the winter :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2iN6miwpXgUterRQfdJtjYi4clJ1OORkQEJUHweZFkS_KLe94C4D1MC8dXjzXv7qMB72_V-pTemiiecBREZVdJJmyD-SdcHi02UQCNI263sedf9IVFPulZR-BXzUMejxXL7sslpRtw78/s1600/IMG_0181.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2iN6miwpXgUterRQfdJtjYi4clJ1OORkQEJUHweZFkS_KLe94C4D1MC8dXjzXv7qMB72_V-pTemiiecBREZVdJJmyD-SdcHi02UQCNI263sedf9IVFPulZR-BXzUMejxXL7sslpRtw78/s640/IMG_0181.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
3. Adding meat to a dish as an accessory and not the main meal. I was fully vegetarian for 5 years and starting eating meat again about a year ago. I am very used to eating food without meat so reincorporating meat back into my diet has been a challenge. A lot of dishes have meat as the main focus and while they are good, plants still make me feel better. While in Italy, a lot of things I ate had a hint of meat like bacon or beef but still used a lot of plants to make them filling and delicious. Above, I cooked up some veggies, black beans and turkey to stuffed into a bell pepper. The turkey was a nice addition to the veggies but did not overpower the dish.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuQ2O3l7TVY8mC-Uc13DePHaf-IlpISvTu2QzBcHCepFbw9UPmNWDMZPKvjd3qoA9pHm9akOnX93pxlTwxrvRAFbXnHD2wayZVdZlkFXdsO1XbsTPTx46q9rLBI7kr0Ruad_TrSDB4qmo/s1600/IMG_0020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1334" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuQ2O3l7TVY8mC-Uc13DePHaf-IlpISvTu2QzBcHCepFbw9UPmNWDMZPKvjd3qoA9pHm9akOnX93pxlTwxrvRAFbXnHD2wayZVdZlkFXdsO1XbsTPTx46q9rLBI7kr0Ruad_TrSDB4qmo/s640/IMG_0020.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
4. Good quality carbs are not the enemy! I used to think that eating bread or pasta was really bad for you and that using my daily calorie allowance on simple carbs was a waste. In Italy, you can eat a lot of really delicious pasta and bread or desserts, but I find that eating them regularly helped me remember that while delicious, they are not terrible for you. Dessert has always been a weakness of mine but by incorporating it regularly into my diet, I find that I can eat it in moderation and not crave them all the time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzzJKX3kCWQlZpAGc59zsT4DYSz6oulTbm6Mhs3tigLtQ_LWrxOT6_RaI6_1Qy2DF9yaxKWVRjzNqDD39rAMSJR9yhdmKZ4_AR2z0HVS3rgijvi1_129Lm7TmZTf6-q3QBX2IWAmNEfEA/s1600/IMG_0359.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzzJKX3kCWQlZpAGc59zsT4DYSz6oulTbm6Mhs3tigLtQ_LWrxOT6_RaI6_1Qy2DF9yaxKWVRjzNqDD39rAMSJR9yhdmKZ4_AR2z0HVS3rgijvi1_129Lm7TmZTf6-q3QBX2IWAmNEfEA/s640/IMG_0359.JPG" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
5. The simplest things are the best - 4 or less ingredient meals are my favorites. One of the easiest ways for me to eat a healthy dinner is to keep a couple of things around that I know I love together and throw them into a quick meal. Above, I tossed the bok choy in cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper and then roasted it in the oven for 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees along with the sausage on a sheet pan. For a quick dinner, it was filling and nutritious while fast and easy to clean up!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861354270283866785.post-88319114227864330792018-02-19T08:00:00.001-05:002018-02-20T22:24:44.254-05:00What does an Automotive Quality Engineer Do?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After completing my rotational program, I rolled into the role of Quality Engineer. My friends and the girls I mentor ask me all the time "what do you actually do besides run around like a crazy woman?" and thus the idea for this post was born. In a nutshell, my job is to ensure that the customer always receives parts that meet all of the specifications on their print and when they don't, figure out how to fix it so that should not happen again. While this sounds very simple, there are a lot of moving parts that make up ensuring that your plant meets the customer print when manufacturing a part. Check out the graphic below to see what I do and some facets of my day to day life.</div>

Moving to Milwaukee has been an adjustment for me. It is super cold as in 10 degree days are norm here and not an exception but the most surprising part for me is the astounding amount of snow we get in one week. While learning to deal with the climate I am now calling home, I've found two places that I go pretty frequently and am starting to love. It's crazy how fast you can find somewhere that makes you feel like yourself and the people are kind and remind you of your friends from home. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you have read my blog for a while, you know that I love love love museums. I go to one in each city I visit, eat lunch there from time to time, and attempt my hand at sketching. The Milwaukee Art Museum has a fine collection of art - including a Kehinde Wiley who painted Obama's presidential portrait and awesome Danish furniture but cool events like MAD - Museum after Dark, Naughty Bits Tours - tours of the museums more raunchy paintings, and Yoga at the Museum during the winter which I attend faithfully. I have a student membership and you can usually find me there for a couple of hours a weekend sketching in the galleries, trying to improve my abysmal sketching skills.</div>

<b>ZenZen Yoga Arts </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
Theriz is a joy to learn from and the owner of Zen Zen Yoga Arts. I found out about her studio from Groupon, where I bought a two pack of the playshops the space hosts. In first playshop I attended, I was super nervous about all of the inversions but it was such a good workout and quite invigorating to be inverted. The second playshop was more of a blast as I started to feel much more comfortable in my inversions and my practice within the aerial hammock. As a girl who practices yoga and pilates pretty regularly, this type of class took me out of my comfort zone in a way that I can't help but to be addicted to now. I pretty much go every other week now and while I am sore after each class, I am amazed at what my body can do.<br />
<br />
If you are ever in Milwaukee, check these two places out! I promise you won't regret it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861354270283866785.post-49765205532598784592018-01-22T08:00:00.000-05:002018-03-13T22:10:07.083-04:00101 in 1001 Update - Jan 2018<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: normal;">Since moving to Milwaukee and starting my new job, I was able to cross off a few items and I wanted to share that progress here on the blog! It's been such a pleasure to decorate my new apartment and get settled into my new routine. Check out some of the newest items crossed off my list below.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU6LEMXM3QQr2Mt6eh6nF-0KsA_57K4uLsx4jOWxPz4v4dD6XkpksEYBr9hhtt8kjaLgyYL4tLV2Ls_hmihhARaNYKEfVgB-9SGkSOlKblvqC5yFZU9eyWDEhSV-ybjjxnEGQrUiV9STk/s1600/IMG_0109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU6LEMXM3QQr2Mt6eh6nF-0KsA_57K4uLsx4jOWxPz4v4dD6XkpksEYBr9hhtt8kjaLgyYL4tLV2Ls_hmihhARaNYKEfVgB-9SGkSOlKblvqC5yFZU9eyWDEhSV-ybjjxnEGQrUiV9STk/s640/IMG_0109.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;"><b>Decorate a bookshelf full of my travel stuff and books.</b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-align: justify;">I am almost done with filling these shelves with all of my travel souvenirs. I am hoping to get a few plants to add to this vignette and then I will consider it complete. For now, it makes me so happy to see all of these small things outside of their boxes and on display.</span></span><br />
<ol style="text-align: justify;"></ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-FoF2I746sEqTb0fMgwtF5XlGgcUWneM_nWOq30CmouI8nvxsoRcW73PmNbIOyrh06mtOqkRr_NCAhzxCciHx5kmGsbdUbqXdjNLCUJdTEl4vHSFqEMhTmoZ67PUgBGsFeShmpCEFFv8/s1600/IMG_0106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-FoF2I746sEqTb0fMgwtF5XlGgcUWneM_nWOq30CmouI8nvxsoRcW73PmNbIOyrh06mtOqkRr_NCAhzxCciHx5kmGsbdUbqXdjNLCUJdTEl4vHSFqEMhTmoZ67PUgBGsFeShmpCEFFv8/s640/IMG_0106.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;"><b>Find a couch or chaise lounge that I love.</b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">I bought the Derry Couch from All Modern and I love it so much! At almost 6 feet tall, I can stretch out completely without bending my knees which is such a benefit. The silver velvet is super soft and while the couch is a bit firm, it is definitely comfortable enough for an afternoon nap. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Figure out how to store my makeup in a more cute way!</b></span></div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">With bins for things used all the time and cases for things used less frequently, I struck a balance between getting ready fast and having all of the things I love close and available. I grab one basket for getting ready for work, two baskets for getting ready to go out, and also the bag on the right if I want to do a full face. I do not have to dig through all of the bins unless I have a really specific look I am going for like a purple cat eye or a deep vampy red lip.</span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX1QJb7rug-UwWrieZZzCfpLwF7JfC0msOMzBJawm3HtocvkkyZdaXgwHso7zTP_j37gmu-Y2ie79G0m4q2mQqT-q_WsVlABsX_uvy_pFBhufPIWZbtyPP5qcIPP6A-cp6aEL0fqFCtmo/s1600/IMG_0114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX1QJb7rug-UwWrieZZzCfpLwF7JfC0msOMzBJawm3HtocvkkyZdaXgwHso7zTP_j37gmu-Y2ie79G0m4q2mQqT-q_WsVlABsX_uvy_pFBhufPIWZbtyPP5qcIPP6A-cp6aEL0fqFCtmo/s640/IMG_0114.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;"><b>Do a sun salutation in the morning before work every day for a month.</b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">I find that getting straight out of bed, making up my bed fully, and doing a sun salutation is a nice way to fully awaken in the morning. As my job makes my day super hectic and full of problem solving, this bit of peace to start the day brings me so much joy. As I try to become a morning person (more on this soon!), a quick yoga practice is definitely helping me to enjoy those first moments of the day and develop a routine that makes me want to rise early.</span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;"><b>Learn to make my own bagels.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: normal;">After seeing the recipe on Instagram, I made <a href="https://www.skinnytaste.com/easy-bagel-recipe/">these greek yogurt bagels</a> as they are yeast free and super quick. My favorite add-ins are cinnamon, ginger, and raisin or smoked cheese, spinach, and herbs. They bake up quite quickly and the recipe I linked makes two big bagels or 4 mini bagels or 1 monster bagel - choose your size according to how hungry you are. </span></div>

While I love to make lists of things that I would like to do (<a href="http://www.taylornlacey.com/2017/03/101-in-1001-round-2.html">101 in 1001</a>), I wanted to make a list of intentions this year instead of resolutions. One of my favorite health bloggers (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BbFDr14nmoL/">Lee from America</a>) inspired me from her monthly intention list but for me, the year will be full of change and I want to intend to do something though the whole year of 2018.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimnEB-TkgXg3ksFlRMvJjjM25LfO8esM9RtHWOJmFHXqmYqcSebVjJQXKtUPouPKwi59keJl3mpSQd5KE_-jQ_xakjRIcZ9AACHQEV6L2h8T-ef4jJcWatLg-qJkSPxY8QC3cfcRUC5t8/s1600/IMG_3704.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimnEB-TkgXg3ksFlRMvJjjM25LfO8esM9RtHWOJmFHXqmYqcSebVjJQXKtUPouPKwi59keJl3mpSQd5KE_-jQ_xakjRIcZ9AACHQEV6L2h8T-ef4jJcWatLg-qJkSPxY8QC3cfcRUC5t8/s640/IMG_3704.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<u>1. Eat more vegetables, eat less red meat and pork, eat more local foods, and eat only when hungry!</u><br />
<br />
Eating has been something that I can struggle with - sometimes I am mindlessly noshing while working or some days I drink coffee all day and don't eat until dinner. I want to be more intentional with my eating habits in 2018 and learn to intuitively eat for what my body needs. I have noticed my body feels a lot better when I eat less red meat or pork and less dairy - so my goal is to eat it when I feel that I need it but stick to plants most of the time. But if there is a day that I really am craving red meat, I need to figure out what that means in my body and eat it without any guilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm_rv-ctBj9nMvnX9uCK4CUI6IWUgA0IsstkxQb4mwsPwS4vbJDfJXHSQpReHIA6L5xpTCXs0qVW7qpPSpJ2XnKmnoAxC7RGowtVOFl9XZhzuM9lY23teWNCpokyQcxGnR9ObsEfXT-KE/s1600/IMG_4174.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm_rv-ctBj9nMvnX9uCK4CUI6IWUgA0IsstkxQb4mwsPwS4vbJDfJXHSQpReHIA6L5xpTCXs0qVW7qpPSpJ2XnKmnoAxC7RGowtVOFl9XZhzuM9lY23teWNCpokyQcxGnR9ObsEfXT-KE/s640/IMG_4174.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<u>2. Stress relieve once a day: yoga, meditation, walking, kick-boxing, working out, talk to a loved one.</u><br />
<u><br /></u>
Life as a quality engineer can be stressful and lead to long hours at work so making sure to relieve that is so key to a happy life. I try to yoga at least 3 times a week but I want to make it a priority to give my soul what it needs by releasing stress in a healthy way regularly.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGgmOawYzb1TJZ6KoW3f6GK0tlmFreyZCgCqLAjw_Yn1n2-9IUTXFe1QFid8UwELggfrSp-93AaCCahYH9qP5qn3G3mrG4_kpYrMFtfWdB1kmZETne2HmkaKjYsIFlavt1BVByILF2lc/s1600/IMG_6369.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGgmOawYzb1TJZ6KoW3f6GK0tlmFreyZCgCqLAjw_Yn1n2-9IUTXFe1QFid8UwELggfrSp-93AaCCahYH9qP5qn3G3mrG4_kpYrMFtfWdB1kmZETne2HmkaKjYsIFlavt1BVByILF2lc/s640/IMG_6369.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<u>3. Make conscious choices in life in regards to the environment and people around me.</u><br />
<br />
I am such a believer in sustainable living. I started with trying to buy local produce that is organic or skincare products that are relatively chemical free, and only to use inert materials like glass/cast iron/ceramic for my food. My challenge for the next year is transportation and clothing. For me, a commute to work is necessary but reducing my footprint when not going to/from work is my goal. Can I walk or take a bike to the grocery store or to a friend's house? If the answer is less than 30 minute walk, then I am in! In regards to clothing, trying not to consume fast fashion is my other goal. I do like to buy vintage or the idea of making my own so this one might be easier.<br />

This post is long overdue and I am so happy to share my thoughts about my rotational program experience as I have been on program for over 2.5 years! Originally, it was supposed to be 2 years but with some detours, I finally made it to the end and it really has be such an adventure. Let's get started!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Always twinning with Amanda!</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Rotation 1:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started my rotational program out in Salem, Indiana, one of our largest facilities and it was a blast. Amanda, my manager and seen in the photo above, really allowed me to learn our business from everyone in the plant and taught me the quality building blocks for many of the things I use today! While in this rotation, she let me sit on on customer visits, take multiple automotive classes in Michigan, and work on some projects on the shop floor. My BBF at work, Debbie, also taught me many tricks to the trade in regards to documentation and TS 16949 and did lots of fun fitness activities with me like getting bouncy ball chairs to sit on at work. It's overwhelming to learn about PM but using statistics, everyone's gracious help, and exploring, I got a pretty good base knowledge while at this plant. Everyone here was so kind to me and whenever I get to go back, it is a joy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Achieved: </b>Purdue MEP<b> </b>Six Sigma Black Belt, AIAG Classes on FMEA, APQP, PPAP, and a basic knowledge of how the automotive industry works as a supplier!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Mentor Notes: </b>Amanda is one of the most wonderful people I've met at my company. She really took me under her wing and taught me many things about our company and the industry. I am really grateful for everything she's taught me but my one takeaway that I remember everyday is that you can be firm and nice at the same time. Being a woman in this industry takes guts but you don't have to sacrifice who you are to get ahead.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I have passed my selfie crown to Mary now - she is a pro!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Rotation 2:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My next rotation was in Emporium, PA under Mary Culver, a super rad woman who is in charge of everything quality document and system related in the US division. Under her, I worked on one main project of really understanding how our quality software can be used to improve production from the engineering side of things. I learned about new features in the software, wrote them ups for the user base, and tried to implement all the new features on the floor in a sample in the site. I had a few other small projects but all of them related to quality. During this rotation, I had my first conflict in moving things forward and while it was very rough for me at the time, I learned a lot from that experience. Mary also gave me great advice on this and I am really grateful for all of her wisdom shared with me during this rotation. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Achieved: </b>A greater understanding of quality systems, how to implement better quality control for the operators and how to handle conflict and reluctance to change in others</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Mentor Notes:</b> Mary is someone who handles everything with such grace and a smile. I always enjoy her positive attitude and how it forced me to see the positive in all situations. When I asked her about how to handle this conflict at work, she told me that seeing both sides of the situation is key, meeting the person halfway and getting them calm, and then trying to get them to come to your side by seeing the benefits. If your side is a mandate from corporate, it may have to be that the person must change but make the change not hurtful because they see a benefit on their side! She calls this "WHIFM" - what is in it for me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqoCTScPGYNd73N8_1T8Pt8DRf7AybJoSqWWqYajDUlFAmzBegJRpjqhsU6CXk2BTPXGKSgMndr5-Q95JvVv9_Ool2lG2ZQHjHQ3cJayb_yJXn2SAudpvuJiJT6t4Rxa1Y4saLP_j0U6I/s1600/IMG_3343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqoCTScPGYNd73N8_1T8Pt8DRf7AybJoSqWWqYajDUlFAmzBegJRpjqhsU6CXk2BTPXGKSgMndr5-Q95JvVv9_Ool2lG2ZQHjHQ3cJayb_yJXn2SAudpvuJiJT6t4Rxa1Y4saLP_j0U6I/s640/IMG_3343.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Captured in our favorite place - a machine that always gave us some troubles!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Rotation 3: </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My third rotation was in Conover. NC and this was probably my most floor-intensive rotation. When I had gotten the plant, they were in a bit of a pickle. I learned quickly how to test and measure all types of parts, create standard work for measuring processes, analyze data in Minitab, help support a new product being launched, and support the operators in their requests. I also implemented some semi-digital processes to help bring the plant into Industry 4.0 until our company wide measures are implemented. My boss Earl is one of the most interesting quality managers I've ever worked under and I learned A LOT from him during this rotation. He handled most of the calls with the customers for our team so the engineers in the plant had time to go out to the floor and solve issues. One of my fondest memories is when I did an experiment on different pan types and had to strength test 500 parts in one day. It was really interesting to see the results of an experiment that I had run and learn how to graph/present them for the audience to understand the impact of the the findings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Achieved: </b>In-depth metrology understanding, how to create documentation for the shop floor, and how to design an experiment, conduct multiple experiments at the same time, and visualize all of the data </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Mentor Notes: </b>Earl was my first male manager during program and his straight forward leadership style was very different than what I was used to from my previous rotations. I had to learn how to condense my achievements for the day into a 3 minute summary, take notes on the fly, and keep tabs on all the balls in the air so to speak. Earl is also gifted with the art of presentation. He is a great public speaker and presenter. There are three things I learned about presenting from him: always project loudly and clearly, prepare slides with minimal words to keep the focus on you and your message, and always give the audience something to remember at the end like dollar coins for questions about the presentations. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Boss#1: Christina</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Rotation 4:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rotation 4 in Bruneck, Italy has been my most challenging rotation as I really had to learn a lot in a short time to deliver results for my two (!) managers. For Christina, I learned how to write SQL and define queries ultimately for a dashboard. For Christian, I am working on two projects in the plant to help with some efficiency. It's been a lot of desk time for me which is unusual but I can see why desk jobs are appealing! I was able to wear a skirt to work for the first time in a long time and caffeine became my best friend. Coding is not simple - sometimes the SQL query works but then you must validate it against known data to make sure that you are getting the right data out of the database. Besides being a more desk-centric rotation, I was in a for a bit of shock with German being the mother tongue in the plant and all of the new pilots going on in this plant!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Achieved: </b>SQL knowledge, automotive terms in german, basic Italian and German, and an understanding of using big data to make decisions </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Mentor Notes: </b>Having two bosses was interesting and each had some things that I learned from them. Both of my bosses are numbers focused. They make decisions based on data analysis and their understanding of our processes. Christina is really good with understanding all function views of a subject. When developing a dashboard together, she asked me to think from the production, upper management, and quality's point of view to create a comprehensive view of the topic. Christian is really good at explain things in a simple way - whenever he explained something to me, I fully understood it without him repeating himself. I have a long way to go to emulate him as I like to give every detail (if you could not tell already) but brief technical statements that are fully comprehendible are a goal of mine now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>Side Project: RocketSpace/Smart Quality</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was really lucky during my program to go to San Francisco to learn about startup culture to bring it back to our company in the social media group I created for us and in the plants where I am stationed.</div>

<b>Side Project: Industry 4.0</b></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Overall:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This program has given me such a great opportunity to learn about the automotive industry, especially the quality sector. I did not know that there was so much involved in cars to make sure that they are safe for us to drive everyday or how many people are making sure that quality is excellent everyday. There are over 2,000 different parts in a car and all need to be regulated for our safety.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Generally, I really learned how important it is to understand information and how it is used or perceived at different levels of an organization. In regards to data, I am just in the beginning stages of my data science and data visualization journey but it is so important to use data, analyze data, validate data, and figure out what you aren't collecting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Personally, I've really grown as a person and become an 'real' adult and while that sounds silly to write, it's so true. I've been in all kinds of situations at work, moved to four different places with little to no friends there and gained a group of people I still contact, and learned what is truly important to me - my health, my family, and enjoying what I spend at least 25% of my week doing.</div>

If you haven't guessed by the name of this post, I am now off program from my wonderful job and I am going to start in Wisconsin as a Quality Engineer for my company. It's been a super hard decision but I think for a couple of years, it's the perfect place to grow my skills and learn more about the automotive field. I am currently moving and sorting out apartments but know when I have that all figure out, there are some posts coming as a lot of these things are part of my 101 in 1001 days list!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861354270283866785.post-91157557216770064812017-12-04T08:00:00.000-05:002017-12-04T08:00:07.492-05:00Perfect Travel Backpack - Fjallraven Kanken 15" Laptop Backpack Recently, I've started to buy backpacks the way that I buy purses and it a dangerous thing for my wallet. These six months living in South Tyrol have been a really transformative period of time for me. And while I realize now I have a lot of growth to do professionally, personally I experienced a ton of realizations and newfound appreciation for the way to world works that I had to share! It was not an easy 6 months, and I certainly made plenty of mistakes but in the end, I would not change anything as I learned so much about myself, what kind of person I want to be, and how I want to live my life.</div>

1. It can be <i>really scary</i> when you literally cannot understand anything being said around you but you learn so much faster being in an immersive environment. I would say after 6 months, I can barely speak Italian or German, but when it comes to some common social situations like grocery shopping, ordering at a restaurant, or asking for directions - <i>I can get by just fine</i> and that was a happy moment when I realized that living here. I am hoping to take some formal classes in German and Italian when I get back to the states so I can feel even more comfortable in these new languages.<br />

2. There really is <u>NOTHING</u> better than a plate of smoked meat, cheese, bread, and potatoes with a glass of good Italian wine or a cold German beer after a long day at work. The only thing better would be the same meal after hiking or as brunch after a long evening the night before.</div>

3. In general, being a more environmentally conscious person is a good thing and encouraged here. I definitely sorted my garbage into more categories that I am used to and I took pride in seeing in a week I made less than a grocery store sack full of garbage. Using an dish rag to clean the house is a much more economical and environmentally friendly way to keep the counters clean in the kitchen. In general, I used way more different kinds of sponges - who knew there were so many - to keep my apartment clean and <b>I really liked the low impact on the environment due to it.</b><br />

4. People are inherently kind and I was overwhelmed and still am overwhelmed at how nice everyone was to me in an area that is not so used to my kind of people. After a physical attack by a dialect screaming Neo-Nazi, I was really nervous about the rest of my stay here in South Tyrol. But people have <i>opened their homes, hearts, and families</i> to me, and I am really grateful for that experience. I hope that when all my new friends come to the US, I can give them the same kind of homey feeling that I experienced here.<br />

My worse coffee day was 5 coffees in a 8 hour work day but in my defense, all of the coffee here is good and so inexpensive so you really can't help yourself. I bought two of the stovetop espresso makers to use back in the US and you can also buy replacements on Amazon!!<br />

6. I used to be someone who never used their phone and with the purchase of an iPhone, I became tethered to this device and all the people I could reach with it. Something about the mountains here is that there is no cell service on a lot of them and that is such a wondrous thing. <u>To be fully disconnected in this digital age is a balm to your soul</u> and something I now practice even when not in the mountains. Put that bad boy on airplane mode or do not disturb, pop on a face mask, pump up some tunes in your home, and read a book for the evening. People can wait until tomorrow - I promise.<br />

7. There are very few things that I won't try at least once and that has always yielded me some interesting experiences. <b>When someone asks you to do something, as long as you wont go to jail for it, I say try it!</b> That goes for food, physical activity and new types of alcohols or anything really. I did not know anyone going to Oktoberfest so I went on a women's travel group on Facebook, messaged a bunch of people and let the chips fall where they may. While there, I ended up meeting up with a coworker and met some really awesome people from a few different countries. Also, if asked, just go to the sauna and do the ice bath afterwards - don't question it, just do it and thank me later for how good your body feels.<br />

8. A really good pair of walking shoes is worth ten pairs of cute shoes. With all of the walking, biking, hiking, and dancing I did in Europe, I learned quickly that the right shoes for the activity <i>may be ugly</i> but they are always the way to go. On long trips, I lived in my Allbirds and I am forever obsessed with the Sam Edelman flats I brought with me and wore to the ground.<br />

<b>9 . Stop stressing about small things.</b> There were so many times when I was traveling or at work or in a store during this rotation that I got anxiety about an interaction knowing that my German is terrible or that I did not have the right answer or I did not know how I was going to get something done. In the end, all of those moments passed, I am still alive and well, and there was no need for me to get so stressed about it. It can be really hard in the moment to realize but I am finally starting to understand there is no need to stress about anything as it always works out in the end.<br />

10. Something that I love about people in South Tyrol is their zest for life while being super efficient at work. When they are outside of work, they spend time doing things that are important to them whether it be hiking or spending time with family or dancing the evening away at a local bar. <u>Whatever it is that is your passion, you are responsible for making time in your life to do it </u>and prioritizing your mental well-being above the needs of others. Part of my personality is that I can be at work until 7 pm and not even blink as there are things to be done and I get consumed fully into what I am doing. It's my responsibility to set my priorities for eating, exercising, and seeing the people I care about because there will always be work to do and people who need something from you.<br />
<br />
I really could wax on about what this time has meant to me but to finish my thoughts, living in a new country is daunting and daring but delicious and delightful that it is totally worth it in the end.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861354270283866785.post-61596225429781914222017-11-20T08:00:00.000-05:002017-11-20T08:00:08.071-05:00Taylor's European Travel Guide I wanted to write a post I've visited about each place individually but that would be a lot of small posts of my travels. I love all of the different South Tyrolean foods as they have a mix of Italian and Austrian food in this region. I told him -whatever he made, I would love it! But if I had to be honest, I do have some favorite foods here that I tend to order from restaurants or at festivals. Below are my top 5 favorite South Tyrolean dishes that I will miss eating back in the states.<br />
<br />
5. <b>Tirtl</b> - These fried beauties are filled with savory ingredients like spinach or sauerkraut or sweet things like strawberry jam. The sweet ones are dusted with powdered sugar and so good when warm! The salty ones are great with beer. To eat, just rip them with your hands and get to munching.<br />
<br />

<br />
4. <b>Gelato and Ice Cream</b> - In the summer, I ate a gelato every other day as there were three shops on my way home for work. The milk in this region is especially good as the cows graze on the grasses around here rather than some pre-made feed. The best ice cream I had while here was this apple, speck and schüttelbrot ice cream had at a house in the mountains during a friend's nephew's birthday party! Literally, apples with this smoky hint of bacon and topped with a bread that is made with fennel and cumin - AMAZING!<br />

<br />
3.<b> Erdäpflblattln mit Sauerkraut-</b> These are some very traditional potato pancakes eaten with sauerkraut! I had them at a summer festival in Olang - if you are in the area, they have three festivals on Wednesdays during the summer if you would like to try these! These are eaten by filling the pancakes with sauerkraut on one side, rolling the pancake like pigs in a blanket, and biting into all of that acidic goodness or tearing off little pieces and rolling with sauerkraut.<br />

<br />
2. <b>Epic Cheese and Meat Plates </b>- Before your main meal, you get to enjoy these massive plates of meat, cheese, and delicious accompaniments. The meat and cheese here are super fresh and delicious - I usually eat more vegetarian that carnivore but the meat here converted me for a while to eat outside my usual box. One thing to note, speck - the smoked ham of the region - should be eaten with schüttelbrot - a crunchy dry bread made with fennel and cumin. To eat, wrap the speck around this special crunchy bread and go to town!<br />

<br />
1. <b>Knödel and Schlutzer</b> - These two types of dumplings are staples of the region and I love them. Served with butter and lots of parmesan, I think they are the perfect marriage between Italian and Austrian cuisine. Everyone has their own recipe but in general - knödel are made with speck or spinach or beets in the dough while schlutzer is made with a spinach and ricotta filling. These are a must try if you come to the area and if I can manage to make a version of either in the US, I will post the recipe to my blog!<br />
