If you love Kate Middleton and The Princess Diaries, you will love this book! It's in a diary format and the first book that Meg Cabot has come out with in this series in a long time! I laughed and cried while reading this book because it reminded me so much of my teenage years spent reading the series. I read my book in an afternoon with a biscotti and a latte made by me! If you ask me, that's the way to read - snacking and enjoying the time you have to yourself! If you have a trip coming up or need something light after work, pick this sucker up!
I bought this book because it was on my recommended list on Amazon. I really was expecting it to be super light and fun to read while I was in California for NSBE41. I was pleasantly surprised when the book I got sucked into was full of quips, math, and subjects I never even thought about before. It is full of interesting parallels and correlations, for example, sumo wrestlers and school teachers cheat on their exams or fights for the same reasons. It was literally impossible to put down - I read on the airplane and fell asleep with the book in my hands because I was exhausted but wanted to read this book so badly. It also made me think a lot about what work economists do and the skill set that that degree provides to be able to sift through large amounts of data and get these great results. Engineers, especially industrial engineers, do a lot of data sifting and analysis to find areas of improvement.
My favorite section was understanding about what makes students good students and the differences between white and black students. One of our big wishes in NSBE is to see 10K black engineers graduating by 2025. To do this, we have to increase the proficiency of math within young black children. The way that this book ties in is that students who are black are disadvantaged due to their likelihood to not have the same resources due to neighborhood or other factors but do just as well as their white peers when given all the same. This gives me a lot of hope because for a long time, there is this idea that black students were not smart enough to be engineers - all they really need is the same opportunities or a leveling of the playing field when it comes to education quality when they are young.
I would say that if you want a really good non fiction book to read for a trip or a long car ride, this is the book for you! As always, I buy used copies of books for a penny and the shipping is $3.99, which makes reading in college super affordable and easy to do if you don't know if you will like a book.
Freakonomics
It took me so long to get this book and yet when I got it, I could not put it down! As an engineering woman, I know that I want my career to be big and to lead teams and possibly my company one day. To do this, I did not realize how many things hold women back and this book allowed me to absolve my guilt for some of these things and want to work through having kids to make an impact on the world.
Sheryl Sandberg does a great job of mixing studies, stories and soul into a book about something that no one wants to talk about. Leaning in is something that our male friends and bosses have to keep on the brain as well. I am in awe of how many things in this book were relevant to me but there are three main points that I took away from this book.
- Ask for help, ask for leadership, ask for guidence and mentorship - JUST ASK!
- Find a support system - a partner with equal footing, family, great friends and mentors
- Believe in yourself and take risks to grow and become better
I got my book from Amazon but it is allover the country in bookstores or in libraries. If you are wanting a career and want to have great leadership - read this book!
Lean In
Recently, I started reading Mindy Kaling's book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). It's a good laugh for me and I really enjoy her insight to being a young woman in college. I'm only on page 65 but I am really enjoying the book so far! I will have to write a review when I finish the book.
The second thing that I do to relax is that I always exercise, everyday that I can, to also relax myself and destress from the week. As I mentioned before, I am a very busy young woman on campus and I really want to make sure that I stay healthy this year by keeping myself happy and healthy. Last year, I ran myself into the ground a lot and it was really bad. I was getting sick, snapping at people and generally just not in a good mood during my most stressful weeks. I don't want to be that person again. It wasn't good for me and not fair to the people around me.
The last thing I do to relax is blog. I really enjoy writing this blog, even if just a couple people read it (cough cough my friends who I trust to not make fun of me). It's nice to express myself in writing and in pictures with the world, even on a small scale.
Overall, I think that mental health is very important and maintaining a stress free zone is really good for you. When Donna O came to talk to us for G4.0, she said we had to have a stress relieving activity. I have several but the idea is the same. The most successful people in the world make time to do what they love. Whatever it is that makes you happy, you need to make time for it. End all, be all. We are all too young to me having mental breakdowns or lots of anxiety attacks when we can make time to help our mental health by doing the things we love. My friend from home, let's call her Sticky, she had a lot of panic attacks when we were in high school. The doctor told her that she needed to get outside half an hour a day and do what she loves for half an hour a day. She didn't have a panic attack for like two months, when she did that. SO I KNOW THIS WORKS! I know that making time for yourself is not easy but it's necessary for you to be healthy :]
